Windows to the soul
YOU CAN TELL A GREAT DEAL about a person by looking in their eyes.
The choice you will have to make as an environmental portrait photographer, is whether or not you will want to establish eye contact with the subject.
While eye contact increases the intimacy between the viewer and the photograph, making them feel drawn in and in a way, present in the picture, as if the person is looking at them, a photograph of a person looking away from the camera can feel more real, and less possed, as if they are just going along their daily routine.

You may also want to use a little bit of flash to add a catchlight to the eyes, learn how in our flash photography tips section.
Getting enough depth of field is another key factor, and we adress how to do this in our basic photography section dealing with the aperture.
And finally, don't forget to look at the profolio section to see how professionals deal with environmental portraits of celebrities
